HOPEFUL SKEPTICISM May 27, 2007

John Horgan, who used to publish a blog that he called “The Scientific Curmudgeon,” ended his blog entry of May 22, 2006 (his first) with a thought that appeals to me: “Too little skepticism leaves us vulnerable to peddlers of scientific snake oil. But just the right amount of skepticism—mixed with just the right amount of hope–can protect us from our desire for answers while keeping us open-minded enough to recognize genuine truth when or if it arrives.” He labelled this entry “Hopeful Skepticism,” which is what I’d like to think I practice….
