Henry David Thoreau had some interesting habits. He once explained, “I put a piece of paper under my pillow, and when I could not sleep I wrote in the dark.”

In Walden, Henry David Thoreau says, “I learned this at least by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

In Walden Thoreau makes an interesting fashion statement: “Beware of enterprises that require new clothes.” I have followed his advice conscientiously since the 1970s. Later I bought myself a T-shirt that bears the last two words of another famous quotation from Walden: “Our life is frittered away by detail…. Simplify, simplify.”

Thoreau’s Journal for March 11, 1856, pronounces: “That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.” I would say the same goes for a woman ….

In Thoreau’s late natural history writings, he became passionately attentive to the natural world. A selection of these late writings, published as Wild Fruits in 2000, ends with an interesting prescription for staying healthy: “Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each…. For all Nature is doing her best each moment to make us well…. Why, Nature is but another name for health.”
